Meet the interns | Harriet Doughty

2 June 2014 | ResolutionPossible

This is the second entry for our ‘Meet the interns’ series in which our interns and alumni get to write about their own work experience and education, as well as their time with Resolution:Possible. We have been very fortunate to have people from all sorts of backgrounds working with us, and we wanted to share with you this great variety. We also hope that these blogs may inspire you to follow your own dreams (read Becky Dale’s blog here).

Harriet Doughty joined Resolution:Possible in 2013 and has worked on our Environment and Minerals series, and is currently working on our social media strategy. Harriet will be leaving us in August to join fellow intern Becky Dale in Lesotho working for Touching Tiny Lives. Below you will learn about her interest in  Africa, her studies and her experiences with ResPoss.

My sister, Hayley, on her 2013 trip to Kenya from Cape Town. She also lived in Kenya with ResPoss Director, Lizzy, in 2001.

My eldest sister fell in love with Africa at a very young age. Everything about the continent’s patchwork of cultures and traditions, personalities and landscapes and religions and superstitions captivated her heart and soul. She planted the seed of fascination that led to me studying International Relations and the job I have now in Lesotho, Southern Africa. I work for Touching Tiny Lives, a foundation that works to support HIV prevention & treatment schemes in Mokhotlong.

She planted the seed, but I owe the job 100% to Resolution Possible in every possible way. They took me in as an inexperienced student and prepped me for the world of work and introduced me to the job.

fam6I’d focused my studies on food security and the EU’s relationship with the African Union. My first role with ResPoss was as Researcher for the blogs, which gave me the opportunity to adapt and publish some of my academic work for a wider audience. I wanted to learn more about how to use online tools and promote our services, and so the team developed a new role for me as Communications intern.

I have learned so much through working with the ResPoss team. They have accommodated my goals and they have gifted me with so many opportunities. My time with them has been the perfect bridge from student to working professional. I can’t thank them enough for the opportunity to work alongside them!
